MIS Cell Phone Policy

MIS Cell Phone Policy (2026-2027)
It is the goal of Millington Intermediate School (MIS) to create an environment that is conducive to learning and free from disturbances. When students use their cell phone during school hours, these occurrences often distract the student, other students, and the teacher. While we understand many students do possess these devices, our students will be taught that MIS cell phone protocol is for students to leave all devices powered off and in their backpacks during school hours. Furthermore, as of 2025, newly enacted TN state law HB932/SB897 states that cell phones aren’t to be used during classroom instruction, unless it’s under certain circumstances approved by administration. Additionally, smart watches MAY be worn; however, if staff members believe those devices are being used to communicate with others, take pics/videos, cheat, or any other inappropriate use within a school environment, those watches will fall under this policy as well.
Students not in compliance with this policy will be subject to disciplinary action. Below is the protocol that will be implemented when students are not following district policy.
• 1ST OFFENSE – THE PHONE WILL BE CONFISCATED, AND THE PARENT/GUARDIAN MAY PICK UP THE PHONE AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL DAY BETWEEN 3:15PM - 4:00PM.
• 2ND OFFENSE –THE PHONE WILL BE CONFISCATED, AND THE PARENT/GUARDIAN MAY PICK UP THE PHONE AT THE END OF THE NEXT SCHOOL DAY BETWEEN 3:15PM – 4:00PM.
ADDITIONAL CELL PHONE VIOLATIONS WILL RESULT IN FURTHER DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS FOR WILLFUL DISOBEDIENCE.
IF A STUDENT REFUSES TO TURN OVER A CELL PHONE AFTER A VIOLATION, HE/SHE COULD BE SUSPENDED FOR WILLFUL DISOBEDIENCE PENDING AN ADMINISTRATOR/PARENT CONFERENCE.
*The MIS administration also reserves the right to add further disciplinary consequences depending on the context in which the device is used.
